Super Mario Galaxy 2

I really liked playing Super Mario Galaxy with my wife. She liked shaking bushes and pointing the wiimote at stuff to stop them or helping me jump higher. It was good because she didn’t feel overwhelmed learning to play the game she just sat back and helped me out. Unsure if Super Mario Galaxy 2 keeps this but this video makes it out to be pretty much the same thing as before.

Can’t say more of the same is bad with Galaxy, it was a really great game. Unsure if ill pick it up though, I mean I really could just play the original one more time. Good thing you can play the latest popular game and gamestop.

Ninja Turtles Movie Came Out 20 Years Ago!

Over at Slashfilm they noted that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film came out 20 years ago. They also noted that they are getting old. I turn the big three oh this year so realizing that one of my favorite movies as a kid is now 20 years young is a pretty cool realization.

DISCLAIMER: I own the first and second films.

ADDENDUM: After watching the trailer I realized that all the voices were not correct. Everyones voice, save the cab driver is not the voice in the movie. Plus this song isn’t in the movie either. In fact, some of the visuals are not even in the movie. The steam blowing off the manhole isn’t in the movie. This trailer is not a very good representation of this film. I guess I am now having a “comic book guy moment” but I really like this movie and this trailer doesn’t do it much justice.

Please Think.

Its a war that will never end!

Its a war that will never end!

I really like paying attention to United States politics. Its fun to notice shifts in opinion, changes in thought and how people react to that. Its also so petty and childish it makes middle school drama look like a upgrade. Yet I like it. In political thought I am more attracted to is reasoned opinion based on facts and the social good than hyper partisanship, anger and fear. I appreciate respectful discussion of the topics with attention to understanding the other side. For instance, I actually allocate time researching differing opinions. I do this because its fun to know what and how people think about things. You can’t really understand someone without understanding motivation, background and history. People rarely make choices that are not based on who they are, where they come from and current social group. Then again, I think its important to understand who you are and where you came from because it helps you know yourself. I guess this isn’t really a post about that, but I do apply this sentiment to people and politics as well. If you understand someone it also helps so your don’t demonize them. You realize they come to beliefs in much the same way as you even though they believe differently. I guess put another way is that its hard to make someone out to be the devil if they have many similarities to you.

That said, this post isn’t really about that. Its about a trend ive noticed lately in politics in the United States. Ill explain the trend by describing how ive viewed the last 10+ years of the political system in the United States.

* Bill Clinton is in office and does a few things people don’t like. He is a Democrat. He commits a few morally dubious acts and gets slapped for it politically.
* George Bush gets elected because he isn’t Bill Clinton and runs on a platform of not being Bill Clinton. He gets elected because is isn’t Bill Clinton and is Bill Clintons “moral opposite.” He runs on a platform of changing the Washington Bill Clinton created.
* During George Bush’s tenure he is very unpopular in certain political groups because of his stances on the war in Iraq. His party receives huge losses to the Democrat party because Democrats are not Republicans. After the sweeping election for the Democrats the Democrats change no significant war policy.
* George Bush leaves office largely unpopular. He is unpopular because of his policies regarding several wars, constitutional stances & more.
* Barack Obama is elected because he isn’t George Bush. He runs on a platform of not being George Bush. He gets elected because he isn’t George Bush and is George Bush’s “political opposite.” He runs on a platform of changing the Washington George Bush created.

I am going to now divine the future here folks:

* During Obama’s tenure he is unpopular in certain political groups because of the inherited poor fiscal US situation. His party receives huge losses to the Republican party because Republicans are not Democrats. After the sweeping election for the Republicans the Republicans change no significant fiscal policy.

/end divination

My charge is that the impending sweeping victories for Republicans will not impact fiscal policy in any significant way. The reason why the is because of the reason the Democrats didn’t change any significant war policy in the United States. Lets match it up some to illustrate my point.

* Democrats claimed if they were elected they would end the Iraq war. Clearly accountability would come to Washington. They tried to tie the presidents hands to a timetable through the laws they passed financing the war the Republicans and Democrats did not attempt to pay for. They conveniently forgot the president has the ability to veto laws he doesn’t like. The president vetoed every attempt to do this while painting Democrats as not supporting the troops. The Democrats caved in to the presidents position. In the end they brought no change to the current war policy.

* Republicans will claim if they are elected they will bring us out of the poor fiscal position we are in. Clearly “fiscal conservatism” will return to Washington. In one such action will attempt to amend Health Care legislation or repeal it. They will conveniently forget they need 60 votes to repeal due to a Democrat filibuster. A super majority they will not have. If by some chance they have a super majority they will conveniently forget Obama will veto the repeal. They will attempt to amend the current health care bill. They will conveniently forget the president will veto every attempt to do that while painting the Republicans as people that do not support positive health care change in America. They will eventually sign all bills funding everything that comes to them. The Republicans will cave in to the presidents position. In the end they will bring no change to Obama’s fiscal policy.

Im not sure if Republican politicians forget how stuff works or if they are simply being optimistic. That said, understanding what it takes to repeal something OR that passing a law requires a presidential signature seems like, you know, important to understand. Im not saying being fiscally responsible is bad, its great id love us to get back to that. Its just that the Republicans sweeping wins will change nothing in the way of that.

But I want to break it down to a more basic level for you:

* Political party A gets elected running on a platform of anti political party B. Political party A claims they are the party of the people and that political party B doesn’t listen.
* Political party A screws stuff up with political party B. Political party B blames it wholesale on political party A. Political party B claims political party A doesn’t listen. Political party A yells and moans political party B are obstructionists.
* Political party B gets elected running on a platform of anti political party A. Political party B claims they are the party of the people and that political party A doesn’t listen.
* Political party B screws stuff up with political party A. Political party A blames it wholesale on political party B. Political party A claims political party B doesn’t listen to the people. Political party B yells and moans political party A are obstructionists.
* Rinse, repeat.

New Computer Hunting

NEW!

NEW!

In a move that might actually come to yield something six months from now, today I spend a bit of time looking around and asking people for advice on how to obtain a new gaming PC. The last time I obtained a desktop computer I snagged the parts from newegg and built it myself. Its been a great computer and I have had no large complaints with it save its getting a bit long in the tooth.

How long? Not much.

AMD64 3000+
DVD/RW
2G RAM (started w 1G)
Nvidia 5400LE 256M
320G HD

In a world of quad core & 8G ram machines, my computer is quaint. My eeebox is nearly as powerful and its 1/16th the size! Time flies in computing for sure.

I went back to newegg to see what is hot these days. I really haven’t kept up on whats new in computing save ATI seems the new hotness in video cards and Intel seems to put out a great quad core CPU. One thing I noticed on newegg is that they have bundles of parts meant to go together for specific purposes. For 1.2K I can get a really nice computer with dual video cards and 6G of RAM. That said, I am not going Nvidia due to its open source Linux support being poor so ATI is a must here. Thinking of trying out Intel this time as the CPU. Ive done AMD for so long I felt I needed to give Intel a shot. No real reason, as far as I am concerned they seem to be on par with each other save Intel is more expensive. That said I don’t mind going with something a bit slower. How fast do I need the four cores to be?

After sending out a email to the people I know that game the most it seems they seem to recommend not going the homebrew route and recommend Dell. At first I checked out some Dell Alienware computers but seem to be morally adverse to paying that much for a computer. So I started looking at the Dell XPS line. The Dell Studio XPS 9000 line that is. I have a few requirements of a new computer. This seems to fit them nicely:

1) It must be quad core and pretty fast. Right now a base quad core has each core at 2.6GHZ.
2) No nvidia
3) Gotta be able to dump a ton of disk in it. Don’t care how much it comes with but you need to be able to add like 2TB+ after it comes.
4) Bluray

Nice stuff:

* HDMI
* sata connection off the motherboard in the back
* USB 3.0 (nothing ive seen seem to support this yet so i guess that will be later)
* Looks great

So far the Studio XPS 9000 meets most of that criterion. Its pretty much the same price as the newegg computer but it may not be quite as powerful. The Dell comes with Windows 7 which is nice as I want to dual boot it for games AND Linux development. Windows 7 seems to be the next Windows direction so its prob good to do that. Plus it can allocate more memory per process than XP, which is nice considering I want 6G of RAM minimum. It would be nice for the OS to take advantage of that.

Anyways, all this is just preliminary work. I am still mulling it all over. Right now I don’t play any PC games that warrant this kind of horsepower but when Starcraft 2 drops that will change. It would be nice to say I had a PC worthy of Crisys or at least the new Wolfenstien game at a reasonable resolution. Then again the PC game my friends and I play the most is Age of Empires 2 and im not even sure that uses 3D! I guess fun games are really timeless.

Then again this isn’t just for games. I also work from home and its nice to be able to slap a jet engine on stuff when you can. Seems like whatever route I go ill be able to.

Woosh!

Mod Nation Racers

Mod nation racers look quite a bit like Mario Kart. Save that is has better graphics and you can make and upload your own tracks. Ive heard track creation is quite easy. They also recently announced four player split screen and two player splitscreen online.

OK tit for tat how is this different than Mario Kart Wii?

* Four player split screen… No difference.
* Two player split screen online… No difference.
* HD GRAPHICS! OK this is a difference, Mario Kart wii is only available in 420p on the Wii. Dunno if this really matters to me.
* You can make your own tracks in mod nation racers and download other peoples tracks. HUGE. My biggest complaint of Mario Kart Wii is the limited number of tracks you have. Game just gets stale because of the lack of more places to race.
* You can customize your own character in Mod Nation Racers. I can import my Mii to Mario Kart Wii. Do I? Nope, way cooler to race as the Mario gang.
* Cool weapons. I don’t know, the Mario Kart set of weapons is just different than these. Tossing a nuke at someone is very cool though, have to play it to know for sure.

I think I might pick it up, but not for $60. I want a good Kart racing game that I can get different tracks for but if Mario Kart had that, Mod Nation racers would be somewhat pointlessish. Well, unless you only own a PS3.

Hopefully during the next Nintendo console cycle, it gets HD and a new Mario Kart game with the ability to create your own tracks. That would be very cool because Mario Kart is a great game it just gets a bit stale due to racing the same tracks over and over again.

Surprised? Kinda.

Whoa.

Whoa.

The fact that in 2009 we were not able to sell more than we did in 2008 was simply that in comparison, we were not able to produce fun-enough products. There are always ups and downs in this business. As long as we create unique and unprecedented experiences with video games, there should be nothing to worry about.

Now thats what I call corporate responsibility. Notice how he didn’t blame piracy, the economy or gremlins. Ultimately the success or failure of a company has to do with the product(s) it produces. Occasionally companies are “phased out” because the market changes. Like the horse and buggy industry in the advent of the automobile.

This breath of fresh air brought to you by Shigeru Miyamoto and the Nintendo corporation.

PS you need to play Super Mario Kart Wii. Its great.

SXSW 2010 Music [Part 2]

SO MUCH MUSIC!

SO MUCH MUSIC!

A bit ago I wrote about a SXSW 2010 torrent containing all the music SXSW gave away on its site. Quite cool someone took the time to download them all by hand off the site and make it easy for people to get them all. After listening for 3 days straight during work I was only through about 1/4th of it. After 20 days of listening off an on(not the entire time mind you) I am in the Artist S’s. As in artists that start with S as their name.

OH right, and recently the torrent folks put up the last half of the bands. Uhm, yeah 2.05G of more music! I havent included them into this playlist yet, but I will and make my way through those songs too. :)

So far its been quite a bit of fun to listen to all the bands. Some are bad, some are very very good. I might post up my favs when I am done.
