Ok well there are ways of just maintaing one true format – e.g. http://mp3fs.sourceforge.net/ but this is Linux only.

Yeah I have but all my players speak MP3. They all don’t speak FLAC. I also don’t see it as a win to have 3 different formats of every song.

Have you considered ripping to FLAC instead, and then converting to whatever format your players need? FLAC has advantages over WAV, particularly the ability to have tags and embed album art, and the files are also smaller (but still lossless… it just uses better compression algorithms).
